Socio-economics, Policy and Governance (SPG) theme contributes to addressing cross cutting issues that support forestry and environmental development in the country. The theme focuses on research that contributes to: development of forestry related policies and legislation; society interests on forests and the environment; forest resource management, valuation and benefit sharing; and markets and trade in forest products for enhanced livelihood and economic development.

The theme addresses challenges facing forestry through the following sub-themes:

    * Forest and land tenure
    * Gender and forestry
    * Forest conflict resolution
    * Participatory Forest Management (PFM)
    * Research in forest extension
    * Policy and governance
    * Forest valuation and Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES)
    * Livelihood improvement
    * Marketing and trade in forest products
